  • (1888PressRelease) May 22, 2012 - The competition in its maiden edition had started with 21 secondary schools in Lagos but only St. Gregory’s College, Ansar Ud-Deen College, Kings College and Anwar Ul-Islam made it as far as the last four.

Anwar Ul-Islam made a strong statement in the semi-finals, beating Ansar Ud-Deen 8-0 and thus entered the final as bookmakers’ favorites. It was not easy for them though as Kings College gave everything they had right from the first blast of the whistle.

The game, which attracted members of the Old Boys Association of both Schools, ended goalless in the regulation but when it seemed it would be decided by penalty shootout after first half of extra time produced no result; Azeez came up with a surprise shot from a different angle to give his side the lead.

Azeez, who was voted the Most Valuable Player, would rather give credit to his teammates for the success. “We were instructed throughout the competition never to underrate any of our opponents. All we did was just to listen to the coach and play as a team; Kings College gave us the scare but we believed from the beginning we could do it” Azeez said.

The competition was created for schools in the Lagos State First Generation Colleges Association and the winners will eventually meet the winners of the on-going GTBank-Lagos State Principals Cup in the Super Cup clash.
