  • Miami, FL (1888PressRelease) November 12, 2011 - This special event will include a dinner, silent and live auctions, music, and the highlight of the evening - the presentation of the 2011 Michael Shores Citizen of the Year Award to Baseball Hall of Famer Andre Dawson.

Andre Dawson, played 21 seasons in Major League Baseball for the Montreal Expos, the Chicago Cubs, and the Boston Red Sox, before finishing his career with the Florida Marlins in 1995-96. In addition to his stellar baseball credentials, Dawson has made a tremendous impact on the city and citizens of his hometown, Miami, FL. He graduated from Southwest Miami Senior High School in Miami and Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. Following the 1987 season, South Miami honored Mr. Dawson by renaming a street "Andre Dawson Drive." In 2010 Andre was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

"I am a member of the Kiwanis for one reason: great people doing great things for the community," said Bob Arnold, founding attorney at The Victoria Law Group and Board Member of the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club. "In terms of the impact on a city made by one person, few stars shine brighter than Andre Dawson."

Half of the Dinner Auction proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Drug Court, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting the Miami-Dade County Drug Court. Since 2003, they have helped the Miami-Dade Drug Court to provide medical treatment, affordable housing, educational opportunities, and emergency help to encourage the recovering addict.

The other half will support the various charitable activities of the Kiwanis Club of Biscayne Bay Youth Foundation, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization fostering student leadership and creating educational opportunities for children in the City of Miami. By buying a ticket or making a donation you support our newly expanded initiative to provide fun, artistic, cultural, and science-centered educational opportunities for an even greater number of children in inner-city public schools. Tragically, these important features of a well-rounded, quality education may disappear from Miami-Dade Public Schools due to unprecedented budget cuts.

Besides our already successful in-school reading programs, etiquette lessons, tours of the Everglades, and field trips to the Biscayne Nature Center, there are exciting new programs including a creative-holistic, after-school art program developed by Art Studio Miami and a comprehensive in-school art and music program which culminates in a live performance by Orchestra Miami.

The dinner auction will be held at the Renaissance Ballrooms at 5910 S.W. 8th Street in Miami, Florida and begins at 6:00pm with a cocktail reception and silent auction. Dinner starts at 7:00pm with a live auction of trips, art, collectibles and more. Tickets are limited and available for $75.00 each. They are expected to sell out. Your contributions combined with the efforts of our volunteers can make a difference and change our community one child at a time. We hope that you will join us for an entertaining auction and dinner on November 19, 2011. Cocktail attire. A vegetarian meal is available when requested in advance.
