Ancient Algae- A New Hope For All The Patients Suffering From Hard To Treat Cancers
The American brain tumor association, founded in 1973, was the first and is now the only organization in the United States which is committed to providing funds, support services and programs to the brain tumor patients and their families.
- New York, NY (1888PressRelease) May 14, 2016 - American brain tumor association is the first national organization that is committed to funding the researchers of brain tumor field and provides support and education programs to make people belonging to all age groups aware about the brain tumors symptoms.
Jane Ishmael an associate professor of pharmacology at Oregon State University found that a new compound produced by an ancient specie of algae, Coibamide A, has potent anti-cancer activities.
Kerry McPhail, a scuba-diving scientist at the Oregon State Universide found Coibamide A eight years ago. A new study shows that Coibamide A has potent anti-cancer activities in mice and all the cell cultures that form tumors in the brain.
During a dive in Panama's Coiba national park, the professor McPhail discovered the algae. It is studied that the algae turns out to be a combination of three algal species that are found together on rocks in areas where there fast-running water.
After professor McPhail isolated Coibamide A from the blend of three algal species, it was run through a National Cancer Institute screening system. The pattern of activity showed by Coibamide A did not match with any other compound.
The screening test revealed that Coibamide a is capable of killing many types of cancerous cells especially that of brain tumor and breast cancer (triple negative breast cancer).
The team's experiments at Oregon state university funded by American brain tumor association showed that Coibamide has the ability to kill the cancer causing cells. It cuts of the ability of the cancer causing cells to communicate with the blood vessels. Hence, it starves the cells to death. It also has the ability to reduce tumor size.
About American brain tumor association:
The two founders of this association are the mothers of the children who died because of brain tumors. The head quarter of American brain tumor association is in Chicago. Because of the funding of the researchers by ABTA, who belong to the field of brain tumor, it has been possible to produce new and more efficient drugs which are able to interact with those parts of the tumor which were previously untreated.
The association also provides funds for the education pro-grammes to be conducted for the patients and their families so that patients can take their own decisions when it comes to their treatment. The funded researchers who are aware of the fact that the brain tumors shed a part of themselves in the bodily fluids are exploring ways to find out the response of the patient's body to a particular type of treatment. All the needs of the patients of brain tumor and their families are taken care of by the association.
