- Lousiville, KY-IN (1888PressRelease) October 23, 2013 - Anchorage resident Dave Contarino is proud to announce that the Kentucky Board of Education has acknowledged Anchorage Independent as one of the state's "Districts of Distinction." In addition to Anchorage Independent, seven other school systems were selected to receive the "District of Distinction" honor in its inaugural year, says Dave Contarino.
Dave Contarino points out that the new program is part of Kentucky's No Child Left Behind waiver. Districts earning this status were required to meet all academic measures as determined by the Department of Education.
Dave Contarino refers to this recognition as a celebration of one of the best school districts in Kentucky. Anchorage Independent is an independent school district with a consistent history of excellence in education. The award is an acknowledgement of the quality of schools located in this small town, asserts Dave Contarino. For example, Dave Contarino notes that Anchorage Middle School has consistently ranked number one in the state on the Common Core standards test.
Dave Contarino shares that administrators, board members and superintendents were recognized in the following districts: Anchorage Independent, Pikeville Independent, Murray Independent, Corbin Independent, Fort Thomas Independent, Walton-Verona Independent, Beachwood Independent and Boyle County.
Dave Contarino believes that the "District of Distinction" honor is a remarkable accomplishment given the rigorous set of standards. For school districts to be eligible, they must rank in the 95th percentile or above based on a number of different educational aspects. These categories included growth, gap, achievement, graduation rate, and college and career readiness, says Dave Contarino. Additionally, Dave Contarino asserts that they must meet the federal annual measurable objectives (AMO) requirement with 95 percent of student assessed.
Dave Contarino attributes this success to strong leadership and community involvement. The mission statement for Anchorage Independent includes a stated objective to promote lifelong learning through exploration, inspiration and connection.
According to Dave Contarino, parent involvement is crucial to the future of Anchorage Independent. Dave Contarino praises the generous mothers and fathers who regularly volunteer as presenters and lecturers, office assistants, classroom assistants, library monitors, and special event coordinators.
Anchorage Independent emphasizes skills training and professional development, says Dave Contarino. The staff of highly knowledgeable instructors uses a vast assortment of educational strategies while applying their in-depth knowledge in the classroom. Dave Contarino sees particular value in the math and writing mentor programs, which offer teachers a wide range of opportunities to share different approaches that have worked for them.
Each winning district will receive a congratulatory banner, notes Dave Contarino, as well as a special letterhead logo and other materials for use in their communications. The challenge for Anchorage Independent will be to tell others about this recognition in order to encourage educational values throughout the state, says Dave Contarino.
