- (1888PressRelease) July 28, 2022 - Yas Marina Circuit is all geared up to host the 14th Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November 2022. Along with the Formula 1 world championship, the Circuit is also hosting the FIA Formula 2 Championship during the same weekend. Yas Marina Circuit also hosts various other motor racing events besides Formula 1. A few of these events are even open to non-professional drivers for participation. These motor racing events include the Yas Racing Series which comprises the Asian Le Mans, the Formula Regional Asian Championship, FIA Formula 4 UAE, Gulf Radical Cup, NGK UAE Procar Championship, and UAE Time Attack. Besides Yas Racing Series, other motorsports that the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi GP Circuit hosts are the Yas Super Street Challenge, TRD 86 Cup, and Emirates Drift Championship.
The Yas Racing Series
The Yas Racing Series includes several local and international motor racing competitions. These championships are not limited to Yas Marina Circuit. A single season can also have separate rounds in other international circuits apart from Yas Marina Circuit.
1. Asian Le Mans
The Asian Le Mans is an endurance race that is conducted in the day-and-night format. This motorsport championship was founded in 2009 by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO). Over the years, the Asian Le Mans Series has been hosted in various Asian circuits, including the Fuji Speedway International Circuit (Japan), Sepang International Circuit (Malaysia), Dubai Autodrome (UAE), and Yas Marina Circuit (UAE), among several others. Its last season was in February 2022, with the first two rounds hosted at Dubai Autodrome and the final two rounds at Yas Marina Circuit.
2. Formula Regional Asian Championship
The Formula Regional Asian Championship is an FIA-certified racing series that is officially recognised as a way to qualify for the FIA Formula 3. The championship follows the single chassis and single-engine format. The format of its racing schedule comprises a practice round which is followed by two qualifying rounds and three main races. Over the years, this championship has been conducted in Malaysia, China, Thailand, Japan, and the UAE. The seasons from 2020 to 2022 were conducted in UAE at the Dubai Autodrome and the Yas Marina Circuit.
3. FIA Formula 4 UAE
FIA Formula 4 is the first step to single-seater racing for aspiring F1 motor racing drivers. It is also the next step after go-karting championships. The FIA Formula 4 UAE was established in 2016. Its format comprises a sanctioned testing race that is followed by an official testing race, a warm-up race, a qualifying race, and four 25-minute races. It is held in both the circuits of the UAE - the Dubai Autodrome and the Yas Marina Circuit.
4. Gulf Radical Cup
The Gulf Radical Cup is popularly known as 'the gentleman driver's race series of choice'. Its format comprises two 25-minute sprint races and one 45-minute enduro race. The Gulf Radical Cup is also hosted only at the Yas Marina Circuit and the Dubai Autodrome. It is open to non-professional drivers who hold valid driving licenses and fulfil the eligibility criteria.
5. NGK UAE Procar Championship
The NGK UAE Procar Championship is a race of high-performance GT and GT4 cars, touring cars, and prototype cars, with each one having its own class of racing. The GT and GT4 cars include Ferrari, Renault, Porsche, and Cayman. The prototype cars include Ligier and Revolution. This motorsport championship is also hosted at the two circuits of the UAE - the Dubai Autodrome and the Yas Marina Circuit.
6. UAE Time Attack
The UAE Time Attack is a highly dynamic race that was first started in 2011. The format of the championship comprises five different classes which are based on the type of cars competing. These classes are - Street Class, Super Street Class, Modified Class, Unlimited Class, and Supercar Class. The UAE Time Attack is also hosted only at the Dubai Autodrome and the Yas Marina Circuit.
The Yas Super Street Challenge
The Yas Super Street Challenge is a form of super street drag racing and is conducted at the Yas Marina Circuit. The championship is open for participation to non-professional drivers. It is held at the NHRA accredited twin Drag Strips of the Yas Marina Circuit, both of which are 1.2 km long. This super street drag racing is conducted in three separate rounds. The last season of the Yas Super Street Challenge concluded in April 2022.
The TRD 86 Cup
The TRD 86 cup is a single-make championship and is exclusive to the Yas Marina Circuit. The competition is also open for participation to non-professional drivers. For this race, all participants compete with a Toyota 86 race car. With a horsepower of 200 HP and maximum torque of 205 Nm, the Toyota 86 race car features a 4-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive, a certified roll cage, racing seats, a six-point safety harness, and an electronic fire extinguisher system.
The Emirates Drift Championship
The Emirates Drift Championship is a drifting competition that is held at the Vehicle Dynamics Area and the North Handling Track of Yas Marina Circuit. This competition is also open to non-professional drivers who fit the eligibility criteria. It has two different formats for participants: Pro and Pro-Am. The Pro-Am class is for beginners and the Pro class is for experienced drivers.
