An intriguing new family novel entitled “The Brocklebank Fitzgammon Saga” by P. H. Newall is published
About the book:
The Brocklebank Fitzgammon Saga is a fictional portrayal of two families whose lives evolve over some five decades after WWII.
Two fostered children fortuitously inherit a substantial fortune in unexpected circumstances. The older of the two has his Army career brought abruptly to a close when attacked and seriously injured while on an assignment abroad. He subsequently sets about using his wealth to revive an abandoned property in Cornwall, and build a new life and dynasty there.
His sister, whose vulnerability is her considerable allure, opens up the connection with the owners of a landed family estate in Norfolk and follows the slings and arrows of their lives.
The story introduces a number of other characters and places, both in Africa and France, illustrating the diversity and interplay of people’s lives. None of the characters in this book bear any relationship to anyone known to the author.
Excerpt from the book:
“The two-year love affair between Michael and Clementine blossomed despite the frequent absences of Michael on safari. The mutual heart-wrenching when parting was only compensated by the joy when they were reunited. The periods when there were no client commitments, Michael went out of his way, usually at weekends, when Lady Conrad could spare her, to increase her knowledge of the country. Clementine, for her part, instructed him assiduously in the French language. Michael surprised himself by realising that sex had become secondary to the emotion he recognised as his genuine deep love for Clementine.
Michael had frequently pondered the dilemma of their getting married while being frequently apart. Then, one day, his guardian angel came to his rescue in a way that seemed at first the end of the career he so much enjoyed. It came in the form of a brown official envelope, refusing to renew his work permit, and giving him only a fortnight to leave the country.
Michael hesitatingly approached Joshua when he got over the initial shock of official refusal to extend his work permit. Reminding him that he was told the last renewal was indeed the last, Michael felt a great emptiness at the thought of leaving the occupation that had so captivated him.
“Joshua, I’m afraid I have some bad news to tell you.”
“Oh! What is it?”
“They’ve refused to extend my work permit because, as you know, the Government policy is to employ indigenous people as far as possible. I pleaded with the chief immigration officer, but they were adamant. Actually, I was lucky to be allowed to stay this long. I can’t tell you how sorry I am.”
Joshua leant back in his chair, clearly shocked at this unexpected news.”
