- (1888PressRelease) May 20, 2011 - The American Hospital Dubai will organise and host a dedicated otoplasty workshop for registered delegates to the 8th Annual Middle East Update in Otolaryngology Exhibition and Conference, being held in Dubai. The workshop, held on May 11th, consists of hands-on instruction using models of the pinna of the ear and workshop delegates will learn suturing techniques for otoplasty that create a normal looking ear. Otoplasty refers to surgical and non surgical procedures to correct deformities and defects of the external ear (also known as the pinna) - it has ancient origins, being first developed in India around 2,500 years ago.
The workshop is being hosted by Dr. Muaaz Tarabichi, ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialist, at the Cochlear Implant Center at the American Hospital Dubai.
The workshop will be led by two eminent specialists, visiting from Germany - Gerhard Rettinger, Professor and Head of the Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Department at the University Hospital Frauensteige, in Ulm, Germany; and Gerlind Schneider from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena.
The workshop programme consists of a number of elements, including anatomy, operation techniques, practical exercises and patient education on bandages and postoperative management. An important part of the workshop, in addition to the practical exercises, will be a review of possible complications, corrections, questions and answers.
The Otoplasty Workshop is an official event of the 8th Otolaryngology Exhibition and Conference, organised by the Life Sciences Division of IIR Middle East, that will take place form 8 - 10 May 2011 at the Madinat Jumeirah, Joharah Ballroom in Dubai and is the key otolaryngology platform providing international and regional suppliers with a dedicated opportunity to meet and do business with key industry players and decision makers from the Middle Eastern healthcare sector.

Otoplasty (surgery of the ear) was developed in ancient India, in the 5th century BC, by the ayurvedic physician Sushruta (ca. 800 BC), which he described in the medical compendium, the Sushruta samhita (Samhita's Compendium, ca. AD 500). In his time, the physician Sushruta and his medical students developed otoplastic and other plastic surgical techniques and procedures for correcting (repairing) and reconstructing ears, noses, lips, and genitalia that were amputated as criminal, religious, and military punishment.
Otoplasty denotes the surgical and non-surgical procedures for correcting the deformities and defects of the external ear (pinna); and for reconstructing a missing ear, consequent to congenital conditions (e.g. microtia, anotia, etc.) and trauma. The otoplastic surgeon creates an external ear of natural proportions, contour, and appearance, by reshaping, moving, and augmenting the cartilaginous framework of the pinna. Moreover, because the occurrence of congenital ear deformities occasionally overlaps with other medical conditions (e.g. Treacher Collins Syndrome, Hemifacial microsomia, etc.), otoplasty procedures also are performed by an oro-maxilofacial surgeon (mouth, jaw, face specialist), an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, throat specialist), and the usual plastic surgeon.
