  • Detroit, MI (1888PressRelease) September 10, 2011 - The Detroit International Bridge Company's redecking of the Ambassador Bridge is running ahead of schedule and may be finished in December, six months in advance of the original completion date. The Bridge Company is replacing the deck of the main span, roadway stringers, railing system, and lighting. Three lanes of the bridge are open at all times, while one lane is being worked on. Walter Toebe Construction of Wixom, Michigan is the contractor.

Construction started in September 2010 in the west curb lanes with demolition of the deck, sidewalk, railing, structural steel and lighting. This makes way for a wider roadway (8 feet wider) with updated concrete filled grid deck, tubular railing and LED lighting. The new grid deck is thinner in depth and filled with both light and normal weight concrete creating a balanced structure due to the widening. Toebe Construction and the Bridge Company confirmed that redecking of both west lanes were completed at the end of August. Both companies are anticipating beginning the third lane the first week of September.

The Bridge Company is also working on plans to incorporate these same upgrades to both the American and Canadian approaches, as well as plaza adjustments. In total, the Bridge Company has five Unions (USA Carpenter's Union, USA Laborer's Union, Canadian Laborer's Union, USA Painter's Union and Canadian Painter's Union) along with nine Subcontractors (Cox Brothers Machining, Superior Concrete, Soils and Materials Engineers (SME), Seaway Painting, Modjeski and Masters, Mill-Am Corp., Rauhorn Electric and HRC (Hubbell Roth and Clark) performing work on the bridge.

Dan Stamper, president of the Detroit International Bridge Company, said today, "This redecking project demonstrates our commitment to invest whatever it takes to provide the safest, most efficient crossing in North America." He added, " The $25 million investment translates into toll credits that would allow the state of Michigan to be eligible for $50 million in federal transportation funds. We look forward to continuing to provide toll credits to create jobs and improve our statewide infrastructure."
