Aloha International Piano Festival Announces 2011 Artists

  • Honolulu, HI (1888PressRelease) April 28, 2011 - The 2011 Aloha International Piano Festival (AIPF) will welcome world-renowned concert pianists Jon Nakamatsu, Sara Davis Buechner, Lisa Nakamichi, Noriko Uenaka, Sean Botkin and Norman Krieger, as well as acclaimed composer John Bayless, to the sixth annual festival from June 11 to 18 at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu. Each year, AIPF presents a weeklong series of concerts, free events and piano masterclasses, as well as the Aloha International Piano Competition.

    AIPF also features a free community concert titled Pianomania Encore! at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 12. Pianomania Encore! features ensembles of up to 10 pianists performing together on five pianos, with selections conducted by concert pianist Sara Davis Buechner. The free concert also features the Hawaii premiere of a beautiful new work by John Bayless titled "Winter Tableau," performed by Evan Lin, age 16, of Honolulu. Bayless will be in attendance and will be pleased to take questions from the audience.

    Bayless, one of America's most admired contemporary composers and recording artists, will also give a masterclass at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15. As a teacher, Bayless has conducted masterclasses at Juilliard, Kent State, Dennison University, University of Houston and The Royal Academy of Music in London.

    New for 2011, music lovers will have the chance to meet Jon Nakamatsu - winner of the Tenth Van Cliburn Piano Competition - at the informal "Conversations with Jon Nakamatsu" at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 16. Nakamatsu will share career insights into life as a professional concert pianist, while also answering questions from the audience.

    Back by popular demand, the AIPF concert series features Buechner in what promises-to-be a wonderful and uplifting evening of music and dialogue at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14. A major prizewinner of many of the world's most prestigious international piano competitions - Reine Elisabeth of Belgium, Leeds, Salzburg, Sydney and Vienna - she established her career by winning the Gold Medal of the 1984 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah, and as a Bronze Medalist of the 1986 Tschaikowsky International Piano Competition in Moscow.

    All Festival guest artists will perform in the riveting Festival Finale concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 18. Nakamatsu, Buechner, Nakamichi, Uenaka, Botkin, Krieger and Bayless will be joined on stage by violinist Ignace Jang and clarinetist Scott Anderson for a spectacular night of music in Hawaii.
