Airbus Defence and Space to provide an update on EDRS-A status at Global MilSatCom 2016

- (1888PressRelease) October 05, 2016 - EDRS - SpaceDataHighway is the most advanced high-performance alternative for space data transfer, providing data transmission in broadband quality in almost real time. A system of two geostationary satellites is used to relay information between Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, spacecrafts or airbornes and fixed ground stations. EDRS will enable satellites to immediately transfer data to the ground instead of waiting for up to hours before flying over a fixed ground station*.
The SpaceDataHighway is a public-private partnership between ESA and Airbus Defence and Space. The DLR German Aerospace Center funded the development of the cutting-edge laser technology that forms the backbone of the system. The first node, EDRS-A, was launched on 29 January 2016 as a hosted payload on the Eutelsat-9B satellite. The second, the dedicated EDRS-C satellite, will be launched in 2017**.
