AeroSkills Scholarship Winner Commences Study at Aviation Australia Brisbane Campus

Mitchell Eikenloff, a former student from Aviation High School was awarded the Aviation Australia Aeroskills scholarship at the 2013 Aerospace Education Awards ceremony held at Parliament House late last year. End Quote

(1888PressRelease) February 25, 2014 - The awards ceremony is the pinnacle event held each year to celebrate academic excellence, passion and leadership demonstrated by the students and teachers from the Aerospace Gateway Schools program.

Mitchell was one of only two school leavers from the program, to win an aeroskills scholarship and impressed the judges by demonstrating his genuine desire and enthusiasm towards pursuing a career as an aircraft maintenance engineer. The scholarship covers the cost of an institutional Certificate IV in Aeroskills to be undertaken at Aviation Australia including theory and off-the-job practical components.

Since Year 9 at Aviation High, Mitchell studied both Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and Aerospace Studies and was awarded the school's 2013 Aeroskills award. In addition to his studies, Mitchell also had the opportunity to undertake work experience with Prop Care Australia at Archerfield; Boeing Defence Australia at Amberley and spent 3 months with Airmed based in Oxford, United Kingdom.

Mitchell has now commenced his studies at Aviation Australia's Brisbane campus and said, "Ever since I was very young, I have always had an interest in aircraft and in particular aircraft maintenance. I was able to kick start my career goals through my studies at Aviation High and I am looking forward to learning about how the aviation industry works. The skies really are the limit in aviation."

In Mitchell's spare time, he is heavily involved in the community in Scouts and his involvement has enabled him to travel around Australia and the world. Mitchell is an "active leader" in Scouts and was recently awarded one of the highest regarded awards of Scouts Australia, which is the Queen's Scout Award.

The aim of the Aerospace Gateway Schools program is to create pathways for students to enter into Queensland's aviation and aerospace industries. The program commenced in January 2004, initially as a partnership between Education Queensland, Boeing Australia Limited (as it then was) and Aviation Australia. Six schools were initially targeted for the program and today there are a total of 24 Aerospace Gateway Schools, with 700 students throughout Queensland studying Aerospace studies and eight industry partners. The success of the program has also resulted in three major Queensland universities launching direct entry programs for the Aerospace Gateway Schools.
