- (1888PressRelease) July 21, 2012 - Penang - Advantech held its first ever online solution forum on July 26th, 2012. With the theme of Intelligent Automation, Seamless Integration, the online forum featured keynote speeches by influential industrial automation experts, and an interactive online trade show. Leading automation experts Craig Resnick, Vice President of ARC Advisory Group and Dr. Thomas Li, Vice President, Emerging Solutions and Deployment of IBM Industries Research participated as virtual guest speakers at the online forum.
Ming-Chin Wu, President of Advantech Industrial Automation Group indicated that the next 15 years will be driven by the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud Computing. Mr Wu says, "Automation devices backed by cloud intelligence will gather data from sensors buried in the environment and many other places to auto-manage our industrial systems and even urban areas. We will see a paradigm shift in automation from open automation to intelligent automation with ubiquitous instrumented, always-on interconnected and pervasive intelligent devices that keep systems and services running smoothly."

Dr. Thomas Li, the Vice President of IBM pointed out that there are huge opportunities for IoT worldwide. He quoted the prediction released by 2010-2011 China IoT Development Annual Report that IoT market size will reach US$350 billion in 2015. He also insisted that to build up an ecosystem, sustainable design, deployment, and application development are the key features that will drive the IoT industry. He also mentioned that data speeds and bandwidths that sensor technology uses to transmit data are what will push IOT even further. Therefore, to accelerate the development of IoT, open collaboration and innovation should be encouraged and followed.
Craig Resnick, further discussed some of the trends in industrial automation such as embedded intelligent devices for plant asset management, remote devices for mobile computing, mobile enterprise application platforms and ubiquitous cloud-based devices which help connect to cloud services from anywhere. Energy, urban infrastructure and machine automation are expected to be most influenced.
