  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) April 18, 2012 - Adelphi University will once again have the honor of serving as a "take back" site on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 28, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This event, administered by The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), is open to the entire local community. A drop off box for disposal of unused prescription drugs will be located in the Ruth S. Harley University Center.

The DEA saw much success with its last take back day in October 2011, bringing in 377,086 pounds of unused and expired prescription medications for disposal. Out of 5,327 take back sites throughout the country, Adelphi University was the only university in the state of New York designated as a take back site. To date, the DEA has removed a total of 995,185 pounds of prescription medication from circulation.

A quickly growing physical and emotional health problem throughout the United States, prescription drug abuse is the second most commonly abused category of drugs, ahead of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamines. According to the National Institute of Health in 2009, nearly 20 percent of people in the United States have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons. The DEA created this event in hopes of diffusing a deceitful and deadly problem that affects so many lives.
