The nursing intensive program is designed by Dr. Helen C. Ballestas, Ph.D., RN, ANP, assistant professor in the School of Nursing at Adelphi and will be implemented by various nursing professors who are experts in their field of nursing.
Through the Nursing Intensive, students will receive primary education about the role of the registered nurse professional. The Intensive will cover a range of topics including: Introduction to Nursing, Health and Everday Living, Concepts of Growth & Development, pharmacology Introduction, Roles of the Advanced Practice Nurse, Introduction to Nutrition, Learning Professional Growth, CPR Certification, SIM-Man Introduction, Computer Skills Introduction, opportunities to visit and tour local area hospitals and/or nursing homes plus two guest lecturers. Students will also be given job shadowing opportunities at one or more hospitals. The program will teach students the expectations of licensed professionals and how to work in a professional environment. The Intensive will serve as an important step in the career exploration process for students by allowing them firsthand experience and in-depth exploration. Through the program, students will gain insight and be able to decide whether pursuing the professional path of nursing as a career would be the right path for them.
In holding this program, Adelphi hopes to give students a realistic idea of the amount of time and rigor needed to achieve both academic and clinical success in the competitive and dedicated field of nursing in order to prepare them for college nursing programs.
The program is intended for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. To be considered for the program, students should prepare an application package consisting of a letter of interest detailing the student's interest in nursing as well as the Nursing Intensive, a sealed letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor addressing the student's level of academic success and maturity, and an unofficial copy of the student's high school transcript. Applications should be sent to Erin Raia, High School Program Coordinator, Hagedorn Hall Room 201, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY 11530. Applications must be received no later than June 1, 2011.
