Acclaimed Canadian Artist Viktor Mitic Supports David Suzuki Foundation
Sensational Artist Debuts Highly Anticipated, Environmentally Charged "Rain Dance" with Stunning Art Book and North American Debut of the Original Painting Series.
- Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, CA (1888PressRelease) September 24, 2011 - Canadian contemporary visual artist Viktor Mitic's newest painting series Rain Dance makes its North American debut this October with a formal exhibition in Toronto accompanied by a beautifully printed art book, after the first exhibition of the series at the Muramatsu Gallery in Tokyo, supported by the Government of Canada.
Mitic is perhaps best known for his controversial approach to art, firing live ammunition at images he has painted of celebrities and iconic personalities. His bullet-riddled paintings offer an acerbic commentary on society's attitudes towards guns and violence and its obsession with fame.
In "Rain Dance," Mitic exploits another unusual process, mixing natural elements with traditional painting mediums. The entire series was created outdoors across various locations in North America, in the rain. Mitic says, "I love painting outdoors, and I used to rush my paintings back inside with the arrival of dark clouds. After forgetting to do so one day in 2006, when the storm passed I noticed a very unusual effect on the canvas. I tried replicating the effect with a garden hose but it didn't work - so I gave it another try when it next rained and the result was Rain Dance. Acid in the rain seems to separate the pigments in the oil paint and creates fascinating textures."
Mitic will launch his book Rain Dance at one of Canada's most prestigious galleries, Gallery Moos. The book and show offer a visual commentary on a remarkable mixture of art with environmental influences. Showcasing Mitic's unorthodox and often mystical work, Rain Dance is an extremely powerful statement.
The David Suzuki Foundation's mandate is that Canadians act on the understanding that we are all interconnected with nature. Accordingly, Mitic has chosen to make the Foundation a beneficiary of a portion of the sales of his work. "Artistic expression is a wonderful way to reflect and connect with nature," says DSF Development Director Andrea Seale. "We are pleased that Viktor Mitic has chosen to support our work with his brilliant creations."
Rain Dance, the book will be available for sale at Chapters/Indigo, Barnes and Noble, Amazon.ca, and other fine bookstores in Canada and the USA for $39.95, with 10% of the proceeds going to the Foundation (DSF).
