ACCC Warns Parents About Dangers of Children’s Convertible Tricycles
Following a review in Australia of children’s convertible tricycles, the ACCC is warning parents and carers of the dangers of using these products for transportation.
- (1888PressRelease) September 08, 2018 - The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has released a press release warning parents and people looking after children to refrain from using convertible tricycles for transportation. In addition, the ACCC has written to suppliers of these types of tricycle informing them of their decision.
The decision is based upon the acknowledgement that, although the convertible has some of the features of a stroller, they do not have the mandatory safety features needed for a stroller. Without the relevant safety requirements of a stroller however, convertible tricycles can represent a safety risk to the child being transported.
Convertible tricycles are defined as toy tricycles with additional features that allow the parent or carer to push the child when it gets tired. These features include push bars, freewheeling wheels or a footrest.
Additional stroller features may include:
• A high backrest for the child
• A harness for the child
• Ability to disengage child steering
• Ability to disengage or remove the pedals
• Ability to semi-recline or recline the child’s seat
The ACCC has also expressed concern that some suppliers are giving the impression that they are safe when performing the transportation function.
