Absurd's game 'Alpha' hits Google Play
18 year old, self taught developer Absurd releases 'Alpha' - a stylish, eccentric arcade game where the player has to eat their way to the top of the food chain.
- (1888PressRelease) April 12, 2015 - IRELAND - "An Alpha's meal that ate the Alpha". In the dog-eat-dog world created by Absurd in his debut game, the small guy was always eaten by the big guy and never the other way around. It is up to the player to change that. Featuring flat graphics, bold colours and smooth animations the objective of the game is simple. The protagonist begins at the bottom of the food chain and can only eat those smaller than itself to grow bigger. The bigger it grows the more it can eat. In this manner, the player must grow the protagonist to the top of the food chain.
Available today, Alpha was developed by Absurd completely in Java using the modern, flat, graphical design style. Call it cruel but Absurd takes pride in the amount of aggravating fails and replays that new players will experience. After all, fails and replays are the core of any arcade game, and are responsible for frustrating the fanbase into falling in love with it. Although deaths are largely governed by the skill and reaction speeds of the player luck also comes into play throughout the course of each game session. As the player adapts to the game, paired with powerups and techniques that they pick up on the way their score gets higher and higher with each try. As soon as a player dies, their score gets automatically uploaded to the Google Play leaderboards and they get stacked up against their friends.
"As my first project I wanted to create a simple but addictive game. Something that will captivate the player's attention but at the same time will allow the user to unwind their brain due to the little amount of rules they have to remember. Something that doesn't really have any return value but at the same time makes the user want to keep playing." said Absurd. "When developing Alpha, what I had in mind was a pick-up-set-down kind of game, not a game where you spend hours a session. As soon as you open the game, you'll notice that there is no menu screen and that you are launched directly into the first food chain. I was making a conscious effort to reduce wait times and increase play times so you can have more time to trash your friends' high scores in between meetings or classes."
Alpha is currently available for free on Google Play along with a paid, adless version costing 0.99USD (0.71EUR).
