Familia Unida's mission is to provide unconditional love, hope and support for individuals and families living with Multiple Sclerosis and diverse disabilities to maximize the quality of life.
Founder, Irma Resendez said " singing, dancing and sharing kindness is healing to the soul and helps relieve pain, can change sadness to smiles and fears to feeling fabulous!"
The concept of the Abilities Prom evolved over 3 years ago when some of the Familia Unida participants were gathered at the monthly health and wellness convening and while sharing experiences about fun times, some laughed and shared that they wished they had gone to the prom. As others began to reflect in their high school days we learned that many others in the group echoed similar sentiments, "I didn't go to my prom due to my illness, disability, or I was hospitalized during that time, while other said "I was home schooled, or simply didn't attend because they didn't have a date or they chose not to attend". At the end of this evening we decided that in August, we would host a prom and we would recreate a fun prom night and dance to the rhythm that moves you!
On August 23rd, we are excited to showcase inspiring talent "Abilities In Action" featuring Ms. Omoze Osagiede, living with Multiple Sclerosis and Lupus, a UC Irvine graduate, Soloist who praises God and Jesus for his healing of her life as she singing love songs. Come meet Gerardo Ochoa "Jerry" who became disabled at age 7 when he was hit by a drunk driver and says he loves to sing any chance he can with his family and friends. Elisa Vasquez will inspire you to dance with her, and shares she forgets about the pain of Rheumatoid Arthritis when she makes people smile when she sings. Jesus Velasco was diagnosed with polio at 10 months, said that when he sings the audience see him as an entertainer and not a person with a disability. Colton Bryant living with lower extremities paralysis caused by a spinal cord injury reflected on how happy he feels when he is playing wheelchair basketball and especially when he sings and with a big smiles said… life is good.
This diverse line up of entertainment unifies diverse populations with a little bit of disco, salsa, and ranchero
And of course love will be the root of this evening because the Familia Unida spirits of love is contagious and rooted in all of their programs and services all year long.
