Abbeville Area Medical Center Earns National Recognition for Outstanding Patient Communication
Hospital Ranks #31 in the Nation and is the only Hospital in South Carolina to be Recognized.
- Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, SC (1888PressRelease) July 17, 2013 - Abbeville Area Medical Center announced today that the hospital earned national recognition for outstanding patient-medical staff communication. The medical center ranked #31 of the top 57 hospitals in the country to earn accolades from hospital inpatients, and is the only hospital in South Carolina to be recognized.
The results are based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), the first national, standardized and publicly reported survey of patients' perspectives on healthcare. One of the key categories measured in the survey is a patient's satisfaction with communications from his or her physician. Abbeville Area Medical Center earned recognition in the category 'the highest percentage of patients who reported that their doctors always communicated well'. The results were reported in Becker's Hospital Review, a leading source for cutting edge business and legal information for hospitals and health systems.
Abbeville Area Medical Center and the hospital's medical staff have made patient communication a top priority.
"It's important to the physicians and surgeons who practice at Abbeville Area Medical Center that we provide our patients with regular, ongoing and clear communication about the care they will receive while they are in the hospital," said Dr. Evangeline Gonzalez of Abbeville Internal Medicine, who serves as chief of the hospital's Medical Staff. "An informed patient who is involved in his or her plan of care will feel confident knowing what they can expect during their hospitalization, what tests they will undergo, what medications they will receive, and what their follow-up care will be after they have been discharged. Being informed takes away a lot of the anxiety patients naturally feel when they are in the hospital. Our goal is to ensure that their stay is as stress-free as possible so they can focus on getting well."
The importance of providing outstanding patient communication was echoed by the hospital's CEO, Rich Osmus.
"One of the key measures of a patients' satisfaction with their hospital stay is communication," said Osmus. "To be ranked #31 in the nation indicates that our efforts in this important category are being recognized, but more importantly, the communication measures we have in place are having a positive impact on our patients. We are proud of our medical staff for earning national recognition."
