  • (1888PressRelease) March 02, 2009 - Oakland, CA – If your child, or a child you care about has a learning disability, before you invest time and money in expensive educational programs and tutoring services, your should read Learning Disabilities, Understanding the Problem and Managing the Challenges.

The author, Etta K. Brown, a Licensed Educational Psychologist, at Ceres Psychological Services, states that such investments, and the extra hours of schooling are needless because only 2% of children diagnosed with a learning disability have a true neurological deficit. Evidence suggests that the other 98% can be helped back to normal neurological function with simple changes in the child’s home environment.

Research has made this possible by identifying the specific sociological changes in family structure and our environment that are responsible for the10 to 20% increase in learning disabilities every ten years since World War II in both the US and Canada. In some locations, learning disabled children may comprise as much as 50% of a school’s population.

Etta Brown, states “While many environmental factors have been identified as a cause of learning disabilities, the factor having the most impact upon the child’s development is his relationship with his parents and their attitude toward his success. All other factors in the environment are secondary to parenting.” “And, unless there are immediate changes in the way we parent out children, the increasing incidence of learning disabilities is likely to continue into the next century and beyond.”

“Other important factors in the child's environment include nutrition, allergies, toxic chemicals, and heavy metals. A lack of sleep and physical exercise are additional factors. And, more importantly, when involved concerned parents remove these factors, the learning mechanisms in the brain return to normal functioning. “Research demonstrates that, in some instances, suggested methods have shown results in only a few days.”

Etta Brown’s mission of reducing the incidence of learning problems in the children of the twenty-first century is evidenced by her manual for parents entitled Learning Disabilities, Understanding the Problem and Managing the Challenges. She states that while some of her suggestions may be controversial, students, teachers and other professionals will benefit from the information as well. And if the child has already been identified as eligible for special education, the manual covers every aspect of the administrative process from the parent’s rights under the law, through tests and testing to the development of the Individualized Educational Plan.

Concerned parents are assisted with consultation, and support through four easy steps: make a commitment, empower yourself, apply the information and give it a few days. Parents and others are then encouraged to note the change in the classroom teacher. Ms Brown says that, in the classroom, the child’s improvement will be so rewarding, that the teacher will begin to interact with him differently and he will improve even more.

Ms Brown holds a Master’s Degree in Special Education with certification to teach emotionally disturbed, mentally handicapped, and learning disabled students grades K-14. She also holds the Educational Specialists Degree with a major in School Psychology.
