72 Film Fest 2008 is a filmmaking contest in the greater Baltimore/Washington DC Metro Area where teams must write/direct/edit a short film in 72 hours.
Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) September 16, 2008 - The 72 Film Fest, Frederick’s film festival, returns with its third annual 72 FILM FEST CHALLENGE which kicks off on Thursday, October 2nd at 7pm. All filmmakers, actors, writers, musicians and other artists are invited to be a part of this exciting, innovative contest.
The Challenge is a demanding three day race against time which requires filmmakers to assemble teams consisting of actors, writers, directors, editors, musicians and other artists to make a short film within only 72 hours. During the Launch Party, the teams of filmmakers are given secret criteria which they must include in their short films. Then at 9pm they are released onto the streets of Frederick to write, shoot, and edit their films before the 9pm deadline on Sunday, October 5th.
In past years, filmmakers were given themes which included “death and reproduction”, and “war without weapons”, and proverbs like “The important thing is this: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become” among many others. The resulting films ranged the gamut of emotions from funny, dark, challenging, scary, and emotional. Each piece is unique to its filmmaking team and shows the amazing commitment local filmmakers have for creating exceptional pieces of art while challenging themselves with limited time. Last year there were over 30 teams competing. So many teams signed up that the organizers felt the need to expand into two nights this year in order to still be able to show all of the entries.
The Launch Party will be held at the Cultural Arts Center located at 15 W. Patrick St from 7 – 9pm on October 2nd. Filmmaking teams can register at the party or pre-register online. Teams who register by August 15th will receive an early bird discount. All local artists, as well as individuals without a team, are encouraged to attend the Launch Party. This is an excellent opportunity for artists to network and join a filmmaking team if they desire. All of the films submitted by the deadline will be judged by an independent panel. Films will be screened at the historic Weinberg Center for the Arts on Friday October 10th and Saturday October 11th at 7:30pm as part of the 72 Film Fest event.
The 72 Film Fest is an annual film festival that has the mission “to bring under-screened and independent films to the people of Frederick, and to provide an outlet for the creative community by hosting challenges in the fields of filmmaking, writing, and other arts” formed by local filmmakers and associates Clark Kline, Jason Streff and Salyer McLaughlin.
