(1888PressRelease) September 09, 2009 - A group of racing enthusiast operating as a non-profit organization called Augusta International Raceway Preservation Society (AIRPS) has worked diligently to ensure the racing heritage is this former six track facility is not lost or forgotten. A memorial commemorating the history of Augusta Raceway has been constructed on the grounds.
The group’s 6th annual celebration will be packed with like-minded racing fans along with former drivers from the ranks of NASCAR, NHRA, and Road racing. This years event will honor NASCAR legend and the 1960 Grand National champion, Rex White who was voted one of NASCAR's top fifty all time drivers. A very special one and only Michael W. Smith Original pencil drawing of Rex will be unveiled and auctioned at the event with a portion of the proceeds to go toward expanding the memorial. Rex will also be autographing his book "Gold Thunder".
The 300 acre Diamond Lakes Regional Park and the 60,000 square foot community center will come alive this Saturday September 12TH with the sounds and smells of high performance engines as collectors and enthusiast unload their vintage race cars and show cars. “Our event has grown each year and we expect this year to be no exception”, said Henry Jones of AIRPS. “Interest in racing history and recognition of the great race tracks where history was made along with the pioneers that popularized the sport is growing by leaps and bounds.
I suppose some of it has to do with aging baby-boomers and the growing generational gap between today’s racing and older fans.” Said Jeff Gilder, founder of RacersReunion.com, a group of social networks re-connecting fans with racing’s past.
Parking and admission if free for this family oriented event.
