Collectively, these small molecules and their interactions within a biological system are known as the metabolome. Four conceptual approaches in metabolomics - target analysis, metabolite profiling, metabolomics, and metabolic fingerprinting. Metabolomics is a rapidly emerging field to identify and quantify cellular metabolites of a biological system at a particular point of time by using sophisticated analytical techniques.
