"Watching Birds Naked": Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory Fundraising Dinner October 23, 2010

The Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory fundraising dinner will be held on Saturday, October 23 at 6:00 at the Waring House in Picton. Special guest presenter is Professor David Bird of McGill University, author of The Bird Almanac. His talk, "Watching Birds Naked", promises to be both informative and entertaining.
Tickets are $65 per person and can be purchased at Books and Company in Picton (cash or cheque only), at The Point, or with a credit card by calling The Waring House at 613-476-7492 ext 2652. There will be a tax receipt for the donation part of the ticket cost.
This annual fundraiser supports one of Prince Edward County's well kept secrets.
If you were a rumrunner during prohibition you knew that Prince Edward Point (also known as Point Traverse) provided the shortest distance across the waters of Lake Ontario to the land on the other side. Birds migrating from the boreal forest to our north to the sunnier climes in the south have long known this also.
Each spring thousands of birds make landfall at Prince Edward Point after crossing Lake Ontario, and each fall thousands more gather at The Point waiting for the most ideal time to head out across the lake on their way to destinations in the US, Mexico or even deep into South America.
In the fall, Northern Saw-whet Owls also migrate through this area. Incredibly, a high of 1518 of these tiny owls were banded at The Point in 2007. After attending the fundraising dinner on October 23rd, you can head out for a late night rendezvous at The Point and see some of these unbelievably cute owls being banded. Banding continues until the end of October.
The Canadian Nature Federation and Bird Studies Canada designated Prince Edward Point as a Globally Important Birding Area (IBA) in 1998. Prince Edward Point Observatory is a small self sustaining operation which functions as a migration monitoring station at the Prince Edward Point Natural Wildlife Area during the spring and fall migration seasons.
The observatory is a member of the Canadian Migration Monitoring Network (CMMN) which is comprised of more than 20 similar stations across Canada. They rely almost completely on the generous donations of members, friends, volunteers and sponsors to fund the work on conservation, research and education related to birds and the environment.
