PUACF (People United for American Commercial Fisheries) is a voluntary group consisting of fishermen, scientists, local community leaders and citizens who share the same concern: the future of the commercial fishing industry and the communities that are closely and historically tied to fishing, including Monterey County. Historically, the commercial fishing industry has been an economic engine of the communities on California's Central Coast. Sardines, squid, salmon, rock cod, sand dabs, sole, crab and other fish sustained thousands of jobs for most of the 20th century. Now, fishermen face very grave times in the commercial fishing industry and perhaps an even less hopeful future.
PUACF provides the opportunity for anyone who would like to help our fishermen and learn more about fishing, fishermen, boats and the local fishing communities. PUACF's main goal is to educate the general public about the issues and challenges each of the local fisheries faces. By uniting, they will bring hope to future generations of fishermen on the Central Coast and throughout the United States.
