Excerpt from "The Coastal Headlands of Mainland Britain":
"Even in Britain some headlands are so remote and wild that evidence of human influence can hardly be made out, while others are dominated by buildings as varied as holiday hotels, military forts and nuclear power stations. Many are stunningly beautiful and attract those who appreciate our varied coastal scenery. The flora and fauna on land and in the sea are rich and diverse. Cliffs around many headlands are a lure to geologists and rock-climbers. Headlands have played a significant role in the history of Britain. They provided the front line of observation posts to warn of the approach of enemy ships and offered ideal locations for defensive fortifications. In peacetime, day-marks and lights warn ships of danger and act as navigation aids. Many headlands are named after saints, often dating back to the days of the early Celtic church. Headlands hold interest for everyone."

This is an outstanding book.
Living near Ardnamurchan point, and being familiar (I thought!) through sailing round many others it adds a wonderful extra dimension to these special places.
Essential reading for anyone who wonders what happens at the edges of our world!
