"I reach over and drop the used match in the toilet. Then I light another one, staring at the flame, letting it take me all in, calm me down. I light ten matches in the same way, each tiny bit of heat taking me closer to feeling normal again.

After some time, I'm able to think straight. I don't know how long I've been in here. I've missed Art, that's for sure. I'll have to make it up later.

It's going to be OK, I tell myself. Everything will be OK. James has run away before. He does this, then he comes back. I try not to think about Lucy Creed, about how she looked, distress trembling through her. I try not to think about how I lied to her, I lied to my Headmaster. Because of course I've seen James. I was the last person to see him before he left. And I'm pretty sure it's my fault he hasn't come back."
