"She waited no longer and she ran. She shouted for Riley to wake the girls, and that they were leaving. Behind her she could still hear the incessant laughter of the three young girls and the banging of the end of the pitchfork hitting the floor as the man walked through the kitchen, using it like a walking stick or wizard's staff as he did so. She grabbed her coat and threw open the front door, only then thinking that perhaps she should have thought to check what might be outside by looking through the peephole first. The two policemen were pushing their way into her hall before she could get the door closed again, their combined strength being far too much for her to combat. Riley was by her side now, his two sisters stumbling bleary eyed alongside him and so Lucy did what she had always thought she would never be stupid enough to do if in this sort of unlikely circumstance; she pushed the kids ahead of her and she ran for sanctuary upstairs.
The girls were crying as they mounted the top stair and she could not say that she blamed them. She ushered them into her bedroom, and slammed the door closed behind her."
