'NATRUCAN' Improves Both Fermentation of Ethanol and Sale of Yeast By-Products
Elanco brings to Brazil a new product composed of natural and certified organic ingredients that are proven to be as effective as the antibiotics currently used in fermentation.
- (1888PressRelease) May 15, 2015 - Elanco Animal Health, in partnership with HealthPro Brands, has created a new all-natural product that can be used to combat large bacteria contaminations that harm the alcoholic fermentation process. This new product is called "Natrucan" and will be launched in Brazil in May. Natrucan has shown similar antibacterial efficacy as Elanco's main product in this field, the antibiotic Kamoran, which has consistently proven to control bacteria during the fermentation process. Furthermore, Natrucan does not affect the metabolism of yeast and leaves no residue in the manufacture of dry yeast and its derivatives. Therefore this new all-natural product is positioned to sell to ethanol producers who, in addition to producing alcohol, intend to sell the yeast to the food industry as a by-product.
Natrucan is not an antibiotic. Containing all-natural and certified organic ingredients, its mechanism of action is physical. Specifically, Natrucan dissolves parts of the cell wall of the bad bacteria during the fermentation process. Now unprotected, these bacteria are immediately killed by the acid environment in the fermentation vat. The action of the compound, however, does not affect the yeast, whose cell wall is much thicker and hence more resistant. "Natrucan is more than effective. This is a product that confidently kills harmful bacteria while still maintaining the viability of the yeast," says Milton Serapião, Ethanol Business Development and Management Executive.
Today, fermentation processes that use no antibiotics for bacterial control are less effective than those observed using Kamoran, the well known antibacterial agent already established in the market. Thus, the ethanol producer costs increase without using such an antibacterial agent, as it is more difficult to control the opportunistic bacteria, and consequently the fermentation process does not run efficiently. Natrucan will fix this issue by effectively controlling bacteria growth without using antibiotics.
About the process
Fermentation occurs when yeast metabolizes the sugar from cane, producing ethanol. As the process is not aseptic, there are several bacteria which contaminate the fermentation. Such microorganisms metabolize this sugar and produce organic acids. Thus, the bacteria compete with yeast for sugar, so that there is a substantial reduction of ethanol productivity. Therefore to achieve full production potential, the alcohol producers must use compounds for bacterial control, such as antibiotics (Kamoran) and now an effective all-natural product too: Natrucan.
