“Laughter is the Best Medicine: Confessions of a Young Surgeon” by Peter Sykes is published

Compassion and a sense of humour make wonderful medicine

    About the Book:
It is said that a surgeon must have ‘the eyes of a hawk, the heart of a lion, and the hands of a lady,’ but have you ever wondered how a surgeon learns to operate, how he ‘cuts his teeth’ progressing from naive newly-qualified doctor to competent surgeon?

In this collection of medical tales, the training of one slightly naive young trainee is viewed through the experiences of the patients he treats as he embarks on this most challenging of careers. We share his joy when things go well, his anguish when they don’t and learn that, at the end of the day, compassion and a sense of humour make wonderful medicine.

    Excerpt from the Book:
“A hundred thoughts flashed through Paul’s mind. How could Rosie’s parents be so calm, so contained, at a moment like this? For six years, this bubbly, effervescent, beautiful child had graced their family, lit up their lives with her giggles and her laughter, and now she was gone, snatched away so cruelly in the middle of the night, impossible to replace. They would grieve for her every day for the rest of their lives. And Christmas time for them, when everyone around was celebrating, would always be a time of the greatest sadness. And what on earth would they say to Claire? How could you possibly explain to a four year old that her big sister had gone forever? Suddenly, Paul became aware that Rosie’s mother was speaking.

‘Paul, I want to thank you for caring for Rosie. You weren’t just her doctor, you became her friend. She liked you a lot, spoke of you often, and we appreciate you went out of your way to help her. We know you spent time with her when you could have been off-duty. We’ve all heard about Princess Priscilla and her adventures.’

Paul remembered the tiny packet he had in his pocket.
‘Look, I had a small gift for her. I’d like you to have it.’

‘That’s very kind of you Paul, but we wouldn’t know what to do with it. Please put it with the other presents in the chapel.’
Then she turned to her husband. ‘I think we ought to go; we have to pick up Claire from my mothers, and then somehow we’ve got to explain to her what has happened.’

Paul watched as they walked slowly back across the park. They say the pain of bereavement eases with time but for them, life would never be the same. They would have their memories and photographs of course, but would never again hear that infectious giggle, or see the smile that brought sunshine to their lives. They faced a future without their beloved child; a future forever tinged with sadness.”
