  • (1888PressRelease) October 29, 2010 - As humans, we sometimes overlook the simple things in life - like watching the sun rise or reading a good book. And we often forget to appreciate our gift of sight which allows us to enjoy these simple pleasures. However, what would happen if your eyesight was suddenly jeopardized? Instead of sharp eyesight, what if blurriness began to take its place? And what if your abnormality in sight was unable to be corrected by stronger prescription glasses or contacts? For many people, the development of cataracts can be a devastating reality.

Commonly caused by aging, cataracts prevent a person from seeing clearly. Forming a cloud over the lens of your eye, cataracts deter light from displaying properly. Cataracts may form at the center, edges, and back of your lens. In some cases, people may even be born with them. Health issues such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure as well as excessive smoking, alcohol intake and increased exposure to sunlight can lead to the formation of cataracts. Though there are many other factors that can increase your risk of development, surgery is the only solution for treatment. According to MayoClinic.com, "Surgery is usually done on one eye at a time, with a few weeks between surgeries. It's generally done on an outpatient basis…During cataract surgery your eye doctor uses local anesthesia to numb the area around your eye, but you stay awake during the procedure. Cataract surgery is generally safe, but carries a risk of infection and bleeding."

"HealthWise" would like to take a closer look at the doctors and medical facilities helping to preserve and restore eyesight. "By providing valuable content to Public Television affiliates around the country, we hope to highlight the best and most current medical resources available. We hope that through our program people will learn to value their gift of sight and take the necessary precautions to protect it," said the Executive Producer.
