"Could You Hug a Cactus?", the incredible illustrated book of poetry, hits the web with a bang
"Could You Hug a Cactus?", the newest collaboration by Phillip Van Wagoner and Spencer Smith, is a 40 page book of illustrated poetry that delights children and inspires memories of Shel Silverstein in their parents. Quirky rhymes pair with hand-painted illustrations to explore what it means to be imperfect and still deserve love, something the book is getting a lot of on Kickstarter right now.
- (1888PressRelease) August 21, 2015 - Inspired by the brilliant Shel Silverstein, author Phillip Van Wagoner offers up a collection of fun, odd, and emotionally-challenging poetry paired with beautifully painted illustrations by Spencer Smith.
Growing up surrounded by the books of Dr. Seuss, Roald Dahl, and Shel Silverstein left Phillip Van Wagoner with a love for children's poetry. "I distinctly remember finding a strange book on the shelf in my third grade classroom: Where The Sidewalk Ends. I was absolutely blown away by it. I loved the humor, the twists, the heartfulness; also the willingness to be a little dark, a little gross, and get in just a little trouble." Now looking to share that same sense of discovery with a new generation, Phillip has worked with his good friend, Spencer Smith, to create the book.
"With the art, as much as with the poetry, we wanted to create a conversation between the book and the reader - between the parent and child - about being different, and if they can love something that is imperfect.", Spencer added.
On August 10th, Phillip and Spencer launched a campaign to finance the printing process through the web-based crowdfunding site, Kickstarter. Within 5 days, the pair had raised enough funds to meet their initial goal and the number continues to climb. Pre-orders for the book as well as signed limited edition prints and other materials are still available through the campaign until September 9th at http://CouldYouHugaCactus.com
