'Buy British Apples' says Environment Secretary Owen Paterson

(1888PressRelease) January 14, 2014 - Here at Fourayes we certainly support Environment Secretary Owen Paterson's call for people to buy more British apples from Kent. We've been saying that for years.

Buying from Kent farmers means you know where your food comes from and you know it is 'globally local' which helps the British economy and the environment.

Not only has the Bramley earned the reputation for being the best cooking apple in the world, but at Fourayes, our ultra-low oxygen stores allow us to use Bramleys in our fruit processing all year round, not just when they are in season.

Mr Paterson questions why 24% of fruit and vegetables sold in British supermarkets are imported. We agree because here at Fourayes we grow our own Bramley apples and source fruit from other Kent farmers for our apple fillings and Kentish strawberry commercial jams.

But the most overwhelming argument for buying British, in our experience, is that the food tastes fantastic.

We regularly test our products with British consumers and we make the products they say they like. At the National Fruit Show, in 2013, 149 out of 150 people who tried our Bramley apple jam with a hint of Lavender said we should make much more. So we are. A separate survey showed us that people want Victoria Plum jam. So we're making that too.
