The obesity epidemic is one of the country's most serious health problems. Over the past 35 years, obesity rates have more than doubled. The average American is more than 24 pounds heavier today than in 1960. More than 34.9% of U.S. adults are obese. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death. Keys to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight include healthy eating, regular physical activity, and balancing the daily intake of calories.
The Dietspotlight.com Research Leadership Scholarship Program aims to raise obesity awareness, in hopes that it may encourage students to work toward a future in which the escalating rates of obesity and its related diseases can be reversed.
